Billboards...

Like it or not.....
Realize it or not....
So, the question is not are we wearing one? Trust me you are, I am ...we all are...the question is..
What does your "billboard" say?

God, Please make sure mine always says "God is LOVE" before it says anything else about You.

Orphaned...

Whatchu talking about Willis?
...flash forward to 2010

Seriously, what happened here???
Sweet Mr. D. He took him in, gave him love and roof over his head.
Not just any roof, a Penthouse if you will recall.
He was arrested in January on a domestic assault warrant, stemming from a missed court date. The actor pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge and was ordered to complete a domestic violence course and pay a fine. Next thing you know, we got Arnold Drummond's mugshot 2010
This is not necessarily about Arnold....or even Gary Coleman, for that matter.

It's about you. It's about me. It's about each and every one of us.

"God sent his Son . . . so we could become his children.” Galatians 4:4-5

We were all orphans.

All alone...no names...no hope and no futures.

Were it not for our adoption as God’s children, we would have no place to belong.

We sometimes forget that.

Hmmm...I wonder if THAT is what Willis was talkin' 'bout?

God, Thank You, for taking us in, giving us a hope and a future.

Busy...

"I'm too busy...can't do it.
I don't have time....too busy.
I would love to talk, but I am too busy."
All of this translates to one thing...and it ain't being busy.
It's worse, it's not being available.

Ray VanderLaan taught me on the side of a mountain in Israel, that "The ministry of interruption is the heart of the rabbi."

Jesus modeled this perfectly.
He modeled it for us to see and to try and copy.

God, Thank you for the reminder, that what I see as "annoying interruptions," are possible Divine Appointments.

Ashes...

Whoa there Tiger, it's not dirt!

IT'S ASH WEDNESDAY

Many people, have no idea why we walk around on Ash Wednesday with dirty black smudges on our foreheads. I will personally make an "ash" out of myself probably 3-4 times today, at the very least...when I approach total strangers everywhere from HEB to The Argyle to tell them they have "something on their forehead." I do it every year. When I remember and walk away from them, it's my own personal walk of shame.

Couple things we need to cover-

First of all, it’s not a smudge of dirt, or a really bad mascara job. It’s supposed to be a cross drawn with ashes. However, some of the people "drawing" the ashes are given a more artistic gift than others. Either way, it gets the job done.

Second of all, not to be a Debbie Downer, but here I go, the ashes represent our mortality and are an outward sign of our sinfulness.

Why does anyone want to be reminded of this?
Because it’s true. We tend to forget we are mortal –

"We are dust, and to dust we shall return" Genesis 3:19.

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent which is basically, "prep time" for Easter.

Lest you be confused, real preparation for Easter is NOT figuring out what is for lunch and who is hosting it this year....who all will be invited and where they will sit....what you will wear and what your kids will wear...and oh, the big discussion of all before Easter- WHAT ARE YOU GIVING UP???? I've been involved in many conversations the past 2 days...giving up Facebook, Twitter, phones in the car, salt, liquor, meat, sweets, flour...I have even gotten some calls asking if it was ok to add something rather than give it up.

Preparation for Easter.....Lent.....the sacrifices, additions and reminders....are all meaningful if they are done with an honest heart.

True preparations are done in your soul. So, when we look in the mirror or see someone else, with that black smudge on the forehead, we should all be reminded that, no matter what, we are still sinners in need of grace and forgiveness.

Our God is alive and active. He is calling on us to "get a hold of ourselves" and "get it together" as we approach the greatest celebration of all times – Easter. The Resurrection of Christ!

So if you do wear ashes today or you do give up something for Lent..make sure you wear and give up with the greatest of humility.

God, Thank You for Your gift of Easter and the 40 days of Lent to prepare for it.

MacBook, Philippines & Jeremiah 29:11...

I apologize for the late post.
I got a new MacBook Pro and I am in the process of trying to learn what is what, where is where and how is how.
It started out simple enough....as with all Mac Products...the packaging is half the fun.
How could this possibly be difficult?
I mean, I really should be working the Genius bar as far as the iPhone goes....and iTunes as well...how much different could this be from my dear old Dell?

Apparently, alot.

It is Monday...my brain is fried...my nerves are shot and my patience is way passed long gone and quite frankly I was still reeling from some very hurt feelings over the weekend. I have spent 2 days on and off at The Apple Store, transferring data...and today about 2 hours on the phone with my new BFF from the Philippines. What is her name you ask? No clue.

She told me about 5 times....but it did not resemble anything remotely that I was able to understand enough to repeat.

However, then God entered our frustrating conversation.

Her: You work for church?

Me: Yes, Ma'am...I am in ministry and love it.

Her: You like a Christian person?

ME: Yes, Ma'am, I am.

Her: We the same people. I am what you call Christian person too.

Me: Wow- that is great to hear. Do you have a church in the Phillipines?

Her: I have church, it like Baptist and Pentecostal. I like music. I sing and they call me, how you say....worship leader.

Me: That is really cool. You are a true blessing to me right now. What music do you like?

Her: I like music...like songs.

Me: Yes, Songs are definetly one of my favorite kinds of music. Who do you listen to?

Her: I like Hillsongs.

Me: I like them very much. I used to love the song "Yes and Amen", (which I sang a part of to her....please rest assured she wanted to hang up the phone at this point, but I was paying for technical support, so she was trapped.

*At this point she began sharing with me some of her personal struggles and desires, which amazingly were similar to many of mine.

Her: Miss Debbi, Do you know I trust God with my life because He say in His Bible, "He has plans, not bad, but good -they are for me."

Me: With tears in my eyes, I quickly realized, this call was more than technical....it was a Divine appointment. I knew immediately the verse she spoke of was Jeremiah 29:11....which is the verse of my life. I told her That I believed God orchestrated this very moment and conversation. It was something we both needed to hear.

She invited me to the Phillipines and asked if she could come to Texas to ride a horse with me.

I said Yes, and Amen.

God, Your timing and ability to make yourself known is impeccable. I was tired, frustrated and broken hearted today...and there You were, in the least of expected places. Thank you and I love You.

White as Snow...

Another blizzard- every channel....friends and family up East all talking about the same thing....the huge overpowering blanket of white they are being buried underneath.
Airports shut down...entire cities, including our nation's capitol...all put on "pause" until the great white blanket is lifted.
"Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. " Isaiah 1:18
in modern terms...
"Come on now, let's discuss this!" says The Lord. "Though your sins are bright red, they will become as white as snow. Though they are dark red, they will become as white as wool.
The phrase "white as snow" appears several times in the Bible, but Isaiah's line is the most famous, and furthermore he is the first to actually say "white as snow" in Hebrew. Isaiah refers, of course, to purity and innocence, which he compares to the spotless whiteness of wool.

As pure and beautiful as the snow looks...God's mercy and forgiveness is even brighter, whiter and more encompassing.

God, Thank You for the huge reminders you put before our very eyes.

Mutton Bustin'....

My good buddy Mikey moseyed on over
to the San Antonio Rodeo Friday night.
Big Mike D, far right, sizing up the competition...
waiting in line to board his sheep....

here he is on board...and hanging on for dear life...

a 3 second ride...soon to be interrupted by the law of gravity.

with a little help from Leon Coffee, he was up and... running like the wind to get the heck outta dodge...

The Cowboy rides away....taking with him

the Mother of all trophies...

"Mutton Bustin', where Little League meets the Rodeo..
Where grit, courage and perseverance are learned...
Much like our lives...

Some days you ride the sheep....some days the sheep, which is three times your size, rides you and all you can do is hang on for dear life.
You catch the ground with your face...

and you need a big God, to come along and wipe it all off.
God, Thank You for your constant watch and patience...it must be like herding cats...or dumb sheep...and yet, You never turn away.
"Never will I leave you, Never will I forsake you." Hebrews 13:5

Super Bowl....

Super Bowl Sunday.....

sitting by the fire, in big sweaters, cowboy boots and jeans...

suddenly becoming advertising experts...and arm chair quarterbacks

alongside good friends, good food and cold beer....

Thank You God, for community...and the time to just sit and "be" together.

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." James 1:17

Common...

For thirty of thirty-three years, Jesus lived a common life .

He lived in a common town....had common friends....common family...common looks....

Sound familiar?

It is the way He approached all of the people and places that made his life so uncommon.
He knew Who was With Him at all times.

"God's various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but God himself is behind it all. Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits" 1 Corinthians 12:7

God, Thank You for your presence in our lives, which makes an ordinary day...extraordinary.

Grammys...

So I watched the Grammy Awards last night...and I have a few questions?

Who, what, when, where and why kept running through my mind....
would it be too much to ask for some of them to take a flipping shower before showing up?
However a bright light appeared on the red carpet appeared for me...
The General, Larry Pratt, brought plenty of belts...to keep anyone's pants off the ground.
As I lay in my bed with a pulled muscle in my neck and shoulder, it was much more than the smell of Tiger Balm that reminded me I was getting older.
I missed all of my old friends... James and Carole... (Who are going on tour together again)
Kenny...

John....with or without the glasses...
I miss the days when he was cool

You know who never stopped being cool...
for the record- James Taylor's "cool" factor- is permanent and never changing.

Know something else that is permanent never changes....
God.
"I The Lord do not change." Malachi 3:6
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever." James 13:8

God, Thank You for being the One Thing that never changes.
